House of Hackney, a luxury British interiors, fashion, and lifestyle brand, introduces the Mycelium Rose, a unique ceiling rose made from mycelium.

The Problem

Traditional ceiling roses, while beautiful, are often made from materials that are not environmentally friendly. With increasing awareness of the need for sustainability, there is a demand for eco-friendly home decor that does not compromise on style or quality. House of Hackney identified the need to create a product that honours the traditional craftsmanship of ceiling roses while using materials that support a sustainable future.

The Solution

The Mycelium Rose is crafted from mycelium, a 100% biodegradable material made from fungi fibres. The process begins with wood chips, recycled from waste products, and hemp, which are mixed with mycelium mushroom spores to create a substrate. This substrate is then applied to wooden moulds created in collaboration with heritage craftspeople at Wood Carving London. Once the desired form is achieved, it is baked to stop the spores from growing, resulting in a finished product made entirely from natural materials.

The Results

The Mycelium Rose is not only a beautiful and functional piece of home decor but also a celebration of fungi and their incredible potential. Each piece sold enables House of Hackney to purchase and protect 35 square metres of forest through their partnership with the World Land Trust, an international conservation charity. This initiative helps safeguard vital natural ecosystems and threatened habitats, contributing to the protection of our planet acre by acre. The Mycelium Rose stands as a symbol of House of Hackney's dedication to sustainability, innovation, and timeless design.
