BrewDog, an award-winning Scottish brewery known for its environmental commitment, partnered with Magical Mushroom Company® to launch Spontaneity #3, a Scottish Sour Ale.
As the first beer brand to adopt mycelium packaging, BrewDog reinforces its position as a leader in sustainability. The bespoke Mushroom® Packaging for two 375ml bottles of Spontaneity #3 is biodegradable, recyclable, and compostable, reflecting both companies’ shared commitment to closed-loop sustainability.

THE PROBLEM
HOW TO REDUCE PLASTIC WASTE AND LOWER CARBON EMISSIONS THROUGH PACKAGING CHOICE
The global beer industry faces significant environmental challenges, with traditional packaging contributing to plastic waste and carbon emissions.
BrewDog needed a sustainable solution that aligned with its carbon-negative mission while offering robust protection for its premium sour ales during transit.
The challenge was to develop a packaging solution that was not only eco-friendly but also strong enough to withstand global shipping demands.
THE SOLUTION
CREATE A BIODEGRADABLE AND DURABLE PACKAGING TO ACCOMMODATE THE BOTTLES
Magical Mushroom Company® designed bespoke mycelium packaging for Spontaneity #3, incorporating 20% recycled BrewDog hops into the substrate.
This innovative packaging, grown using mycelium and agricultural waste, is fully compostable and can biodegrade naturally at home or via kerbside food waste collection.
The Mushroom® Packaging was rigorously crash-tested to ensure the glass bottles remained secure during transit to customers worldwide, combining sustainability with functionality.

This collaboration marks the beginning of MMC’s expansion into the craft beer market, with plans to scale capabilities alongside BrewDog, which operates in 55 countries.
