FFERN FRAGRANCE
FFERN FRAGRANCE AND MAGICAL MUSHROOM COMPANY® INTRODUCE MYCELIUM PACKAGING INNOVATION
SEASONAL ORGANIC FRAGRANCE
Ffern, a Somerset-based perfume brand, blends and bottles four organic fragrances a year, releasing them at the equinoxes and solstices. Known for their commitment to sustainability, Ffern’s gender-neutral scents are crafted using sustainably sourced, natural ingredients.
As the first UK perfume brand to adopt mycelium packaging, Ffern partnered with Magical Mushroom Company® to create an innovative solution for their Spring 21 fragrance. This packaging not only protects the perfume but doubles as a seed tray for growing basil, a key ingredient in the scent.
This partnership, which began in 2021, continues to flourish today. Over four years, Ffern and Magical Mushroom Company® have deepened their collaboration, advancing their shared commitment to sustainable innovation.
“A BRILLIANT EXPERIENCE FROM START TO FINISH.”
THE PROBLEM
HOW TO FURTHER THEIR COMMITMENT TO BE LEADERS IN SUSTAINABLE INNOVATION
Ffern had already eliminated plastic from its packaging and designed recyclable glass bottles. However, the brand wanted to go further in its mission to lead the way in sustainable innovation.
Traditional protective materials were not aligned with their environmental values, and the brand sought a biodegradable alternative that added value to their customers’ experience.
The challenge was to find a packaging material that was durable, compostable, and capable of reusability for a meaningful purpose.
THE SOLUTION
CREATE A DUAL PURPOSE PRODUCT, OF PERFUME PACKAGING AND SEED TRAY
Magical Mushroom Company® developed bespoke mycelium packaging for Ffern’s Spring 21 fragrance. The packaging was designed to act as both a protective tray for the perfume bottle and a seed germination tool.
Using agricultural waste and mycelium’s natural binding properties, the packaging was grown into a brick-like structure that was lightweight, durable, and home-compostable.
To enhance customer engagement, basil seeds—an ingredient in Spring 21—were included, allowing customers to grow their own basil in the mycelium tray after use.
THE RESULT
POSITIVE PRESS COVERAGE & CUSTOMER GENERATED SOCIAL MEDIA CONTENT
The innovative packaging delighted Ffern’s eco-conscious customers, many of whom shared their experiences on social media, showcasing basil shoots sprouting from the mycelium trays.
This collaboration garnered positive press coverage and reinforced Ffern’s reputation as a sustainability pioneer in the fragrance industry.
Today, Ffern and Magical Mushroom Company® continue to work together to innovate sustainable solutions, maintaining a partnership that exemplifies the potential of biomaterials in luxury design.
“Working with Magical Mushroom Company® to design and develop the Ffern bottle tray was a brilliant experience from start to finish.
We are so pleased to be able to champion such an innovative and exciting new material.”
