Founded in Bondi Beach, Australia, in 2012, Zulu & Zephyr is a lifestyle brand known for its effortlessly cool swimwear and ready-to-wear designs for modern women. Rooted in coastal culture, the brand is deeply committed to sustainability and lowering its impact on the planet.
As part of their mission, founders Candice and Karla Rose sought to integrate circular design principles into their packaging, aligning with their commitment to protecting both the environment and their wider community.
With the help of Magical Mushroom Company®, Zulu & Zephyr developed packaging that is functional, beautiful, and biodegradable, meeting the brand’s sustainability goals and setting a new standard in the fashion industry.

THE PROBLEM
SOURCING A SUSTAINABLE MATERIAL, THAT SERVES AN ECO-FRIENDLY, CIRCULAR PURPOSE
Zulu & Zephyr needed a packaging solution that protected their handcrafted smokeless incense during transport and could hold them for use at home.
The challenge was to find a material that was not only functional and aesthetically aligned with their brand but also environmentally conscious from production to end-of-life.
In the context of a fast-consumable product line, the packaging needed to avoid contributing to waste and instead serve a sustainable, circular purpose.
THE SOLUTION
A MUSHROOM® PACKAGING THAT ENRICHES THE SOIL WHEN COMPOSTED
Magical Mushroom Company® partnered with Zulu & Zephyr to create Mushroom® Packaging, a biodegradable, home-compostable material that aligns perfectly with the brand’s aesthetic and sustainability goals.
Made from agricultural waste bound with mycelium, the packaging is lightweight, protective, and enriches the soil when composted. This innovative solution ensured the packaging met all functional requirements while offering a unique market differentiation.
By adopting Mushroom® Packaging, Zulu & Zephyr achieved their goal of circular design, creating a product lifecycle that begins and ends with nature.
