When developing this product line, we were aware of the fast- consumable nature of the product, and therefore the excessive waste packaging could create after multiple purchases if the packaging did not serve an alternate function.
Zulu & Zephyr is a lifestyle brand cultivating cool, beautiful, and effortless swimwear and ready-to-wear designs for modern women around the world. Born in Bondi Beach, Australia, in the summer of 2012 and raised in Byron Bay, Zulu & Zephyr has always been a coastal girl at heart. founders Candice and Karla Rose set out to revive and relive their mother’s Australian fashion era in the 1970s.
After 10 years as business owners, mothers, and Australians - we have learned so much about what sustainability means and we take responsibility for our impact in the fashion space, not only for the planet but for our wider team and community.
Our collective priority is harmony for the human race and to contribute to the protection of our planet through lower-impact clothing production. While we recognise that we are not perfect, we are committed to navigating the complexities of a multifaceted industry with a considered and conscious approach. Celebrating our achievements to date while highlighting the areas of improvement so we can make the biggest impact, for the health of the people and planet that we cherish.
PROBLEM
When designing the packaging, our key requirement was to protect the product during transport and hold the product in the home during use. The issue for us was finding a solution that was equally functional, aesthetic, and environmentally conscious from production to end of use.
SOLUTION
The Magical Mushroom Company ® helped us to achieve this goal of circular design by ticking all our boxes. It offers a functional packaging solution and is aesthetically in line with our brand while offering us a point of difference in the market. Not only is the packaging biodegradable at end use, but by being home compostable we are not only left with a zero-waste solution, it takes it one step further with the home compostable option which actually enriches the soil it is added to. This ensured we met our goal of a circular design solution for this new product category.
