RE:RIGHT DESIGN AND MAGICAL MUSHROOM COMPANY® AT GLASTONBURY’S SILVER HAYES PAVILION

Mushroom® Packaging at Glastonbury Festival

IMMERSIVE BIOMATERIAL INSTALLATION

Glastonbury Festival 2024 reintroduced the Silver Hayes Pavilion, a groundbreaking space for social and environmental innovation. Designed by Simon Carroll and Leksi Kostur of Re:Right Design and funded by Silver Hayes, the Pavilion served as a hub for cinematic storytelling by the WaterBear Network, leveraging innovative biomaterials to highlight the importance of tidal ecosystems.

Magical Mushroom Company® proudly supplied refined mycelium materials for acoustic panels and installations, working alongside Re:Right Design and Erthly Natural Fibres to create an immersive space celebrating sustainability and ecological awareness.

“THIS PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS THE POWER OF MUSHROOM® PACKAGING IN TRANSFORMING SPACES AND PERSPECTIVES.”

THE PROBLEM

HOW TO SHOWCASE THE POTENTIAL OF INNOVATIVE BIOMATERIALS IN ARCHITECTURE

The Silver Hayes Pavilion needed to reflect Glastonbury’s commitment to environmental responsibility by showcasing the potential of innovative biomaterials.

The challenge was to design a space that combined functionality and storytelling, using acoustic panels and installations that aligned with the Pavilion’s focus on ecological conservation and tidal ecosystems.

Traditional materials were not suitable for a project aimed at redefining sustainable design. The Pavilion required lightweight, biodegradable, and aesthetically aligned materials that could meet both technical and environmental goals.

THE SOLUTION

COLLABORATED TO CREATE BESPOKE A BIOMATERIAL SCULPTURE & ACOUSTIC PANELS

Magical Mushroom Company® collaborated with Re:Right Design to create bespoke mycelium acoustic panels and an innovative biomaterial sculpture for the Pavilion.

The sculpture, inspired by tidal ecosystems and crafted using ocean-based materials, was set against MMC’s mycelium panels. These panels, known for their lightweight, biodegradable, and sound-absorbing properties, formed the perfect foundation for the Pavilion’s needs.

Combining mycelium with Erthly Natural Fibres’ hemp composites, the Pavilion demonstrated how cutting-edge design can integrate sustainable materials to address pressing environmental challenges.

THE RESULT

THE VERSATILITY OF BIO-DESIGN AND BIOMATERIALS FOR USE IN SUSTAINABLE DESIGN

The Silver Hayes Pavilion exemplified how bio-design and biomaterials can redefine architectural spaces.

The Pavilion’s tidal-inspired sculpture, created by Re:Right Design and MMC, served as a focal point, sparking discussions about sustainable design and climate solutions among festival-goers.

Funded by Silver Hayes and produced by Team Love Productions, the Pavilion highlighted the scalability and versatility of mycelium in architecture, while WaterBear Network’s films, featuring creators like Jayda G, Finisterre, and Lonelywhale, inspired attendees with stories of ecological conservation.

“Working with Magical Mushroom Company® has been an incredible experience.

Their refined mycelium materials helped us bring our vision for the Silver Hayes Pavilion at Glastonbury 2024 to life, showcasing how sustainable materials can inspire change through design and storytelling.”
