SUSTAINABLE DISPLAY: THE BODY SHOP USES MUSHROOM® PACKAGING MERCHANDISING BLOCKS
REIMAGINING MERCHANDISING SUSTAINABLY
The Body Shop, a global leader in ethical beauty, is renowned for its commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship. As part of its mission to reduce plastic waste and promote eco-conscious practices, the brand wanted to explore innovative ways to reflect its values across all areas of the business, including its in-store merchandising.
Seeking a solution to replace polystyrene and plastic blocks used in retail displays, The Body Shop partnered with Magical Mushroom Company® to develop bespoke Mushroom® Packaging blocks. These blocks, made entirely from mycelium and agricultural waste, perfectly align with The Body Shop's ethos of sustainability and innovation.

THE PROBLEM
ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY MATERIALS
Traditional display materials like polystyrene and plastic have long been used in retail environments due to their durability and lightweight properties. However, these materials come with significant environmental costs, contributing to pollution and non-biodegradable waste that can persist for centuries.
The Body Shop wanted to take a bold step away from these environmentally harmful materials and find an alternative that matched their commitment to sustainability. They needed display blocks that could provide strength and durability without compromising their eco-conscious values.
Additionally, the solution had to align with The Body Shop's premium aesthetic. The blocks needed to be functional, visually appealing, and versatile enough to support a wide variety of products across their stores globally.
THE SOLUTION
REPURPOSING WASTE
Magical Mushroom Company® developed three sizes of Mushroom® Packaging blocks specifically tailored for The Body Shop's merchandising needs. These blocks are made using mycelium, the root structure of fungi, which is combined with recycled agricultural waste to create a strong and sustainable material.
The bespoke design process involved crafting blocks that could hold and display different product weights while maintaining a premium aesthetic. The natural finish and velvety texture of the blocks offered a unique look and feel, seamlessly complementing The Body Shop’s visual identity.
What truly sets these blocks apart is their environmental impact. Fully compostable within 40 days, the blocks provide an eco-friendly alternative to plastic and polystyrene, ensuring The Body Shop’s retail displays reflect their sustainability values without sacrificing quality or functionality.
THE RESULTS
INDUSTRY LEADING SUSTAINABILITY
The Mushroom® Packaging blocks have transformed The Body Shop’s in-store displays, reinforcing their commitment to sustainability and innovation.
The blocks effectively replaced polystyrene and plastic, significantly reducing the environmental footprint of The Body Shop’s merchandising efforts. Fully compostable within 40 days, the blocks also add nutrients to the soil, completing a truly circular lifecycle.
Customers and staff alike praised the blocks for their aesthetic appeal and tangible contribution to reducing plastic waste, further enhancing The Body Shop’s reputation as a leader in ethical and sustainable practices.
“We are thrilled to see Mushroom® Packaging blocks replacing polystyrene and plastic in The Body Shop’s displays.
This collaboration highlights the potential of mycelium to deliver innovative, sustainable solutions that benefit both the planet and brands committed to change.”
