Established in 1990, BA Kitchens operates from three state-of-the-art factories across Cookstown, Rotherham, and Doncaster, producing bespoke and made-to-measure kitchens, bedrooms, and specialist components.
In 2022, BA Kitchens committed to enhancing their sustainability goals by transitioning to environmentally friendly packaging. Previously reliant on polystyrene-based corner protectors for flat-pack cabinets, the company sought a solution that would reduce environmental impact without compromising durability or quality.

FIND A ROBUST BIODEGRADABLE ALTERNATIVE TO POLYSTYRENE
BA Kitchens wanted to reduce the use of polystyrene in their flat-pack cabinet packaging to achieve their 2022 sustainability goals.
Polystyrene, while durable, is not environmentally friendly and contributes significantly to plastic waste. BA needed a sustainable solution that provided the same level of protection during transit.
The challenge was to develop a packaging material that was both robust and biodegradable, ensuring their flat-pack cabinets reached customers in perfect condition.

A HOME COMPOSTABLE PROTECTIVE PACKAGING
Magical Mushroom Company® created bespoke Mushroom® Packaging corner protectors for BA Kitchens’ flat-pack cabinets.
Crafted from agricultural waste and mycelium, the protectors are lightweight, strong, and fully compostable. They break down naturally in compost bins or the earth, enriching the soil with nutrients.
This innovative solution eliminated the need for polystyrene, providing BA Kitchens with a durable and eco-friendly alternative that aligns with their environmental goals.

FULLY TRANSITIONED AWAY FROM USING POLYSTYRENE PROTECTORS
BA Kitchens successfully replaced all polystyrene corner protectors with Mushroom® Packaging, significantly reducing plastic use at their Doncaster and Cookstown factory.
The transition has been positively received by customers, who value high-quality products from a company committed to sustainability.
Looking ahead, BA Kitchens plans to further reduce plastic and polystyrene usage across their sites, continuing their collaboration with Magical Mushroom Company® to explore new eco-friendly solutions.
