ICAX introduces Mushroom® Packaging



Strategic Collaboration


Magical Mushroom Company® and ICAX Ltd collaborated on an Innovate UK Business Connect competition project to develop sustainable packaging for small heat pumps. This initiative aligns with ICAX's strategy to reduce waste and promote environmental responsibility. The collaboration resulted in the creation of a Mushroom® Packaging solution that replaces traditional expanded polystyrene with a biodegradable alternative, even for heavy items like industrial heat pumps.

Problem

ICAX, a leader in cleantech innovation specialising in renewable and heat pump solutions, faced a significant challenge: the need for sustainable packaging in the construction industry. Traditional packaging materials like expanded polystyrene are not environmentally friendly, contributing to significant waste and environmental harm. ICAX sought to find a solution that could meet the rigorous demands of packaging heavy items such as heat pumps while adhering to their commitment to environmental sustainability.

Solution

Magical Mushroom Company® developed a revolutionary packaging solution using mycelium technology. This Mushroom® Packaging is grown from mycelium and agricultural waste, providing a sustainable and biodegradable alternative to conventional packaging materials. The packaging solution created through this collaboration is the largest of its kind produced by Magical Mushroom Company® to date. It replaces expanded polystyrene with a home-compostable alternative, ensuring that even heavy industrial items like heat pumps can be packaged sustainably.

Result

The project successfully demonstrated the feasibility and effectiveness of Mushroom® Packaging for heavy industrial items. ICAX became the first heat pump manufacturer to adopt this innovative packaging solution, setting a precedent for others in the industry to follow. This collaboration marks a significant step towards eliminating polystyrene packaging and reducing environmental impact. Thanks to the support from Innovate UK, this packaging solution is now part of Magical Mushroom Company®'s long-term offerings, paving the way for broader adoption in the industry. The project was led by key figures such as Rob Allen and Ryan Little from Magical Mushroom Company®, Finley Russell from ICAX Ltd, and supported by Dr. Sally Beken, Fellow IOM3.
