BIOFABRICATED LIGHTING
MushLume, an award-winning biofabricated lighting collection, creates lampshades that are grown, not manufactured. Designed by Danielle Trofe, these innovative shades combine sustainably sourced hemp with mycelium, the root structure of mushrooms.
The partnership with Magical Mushroom Company® allowed MushLume to expand its biofabricated lighting collection to Europe, showcasing their sustainable designs at the prestigious London Design Festival.
This collaboration highlighted the potential of mycelium to redefine product design, providing an eco-friendly alternative to traditional materials in the lighting industry.

The Problem
CREATE DURABLE LAMPSHADES USING 100% NATURAL, BIODEGRADABLE MATERIALS
Traditional lighting materials like plastics and metals contribute to environmental degradation, conflicting with MushLume’s vision of sustainability.
The challenge was to create durable, aesthetically pleasing lampshades using 100% natural, biodegradable materials.
MushLume needed a partner with expertise in mycelium manufacturing to grow the lampshades to precise specifications for their European debut.
The Solution
DESIGN AND GROW BESPOKE MYCELIUM LAMPSHADES
Magical Mushroom Company® collaborated with Danielle Trofe to design and grow bespoke mycelium lampshades, combining agricultural waste with mycelium to form durable, compostable structures.
Using custom moulds, the lampshades were grown to exact dimensions, ensuring consistent quality and aesthetic appeal.
The process was completed without manipulating environmental conditions, aligning perfectly with MushLume’s commitment to sustainability.
