After the success of their collaboration on DockSense™ Control packaging, Raymarine partnered again with Magical Mushroom Company® to develop sustainable packaging for their Attitude and Heading Reference System (AHRS) sensor. This collaboration aimed to eliminate polystyrene foam packaging while ensuring the sensor was protected during global transit.
By leveraging Mushroom® Packaging, a biodegradable alternative to plastics, Raymarine took another step forward in their mission to reduce marine debris.

The Problem

Raymarine faced a pressing challenge: marine debris, 90% of which comes from plastic foams, is devastating ocean ecosystems.
The AHRS sensor, a critical component of their AR200 marine stabilization module, required packaging that could withstand rigorous transit conditions, including drop, impact, and stress tests. While polystyrene provided the necessary durability, its environmental cost was incompatible with Raymarine’s sustainability goals.
To align with their mission of ocean conservation, Raymarine needed an alternative material that offered both robust protection and a significantly reduced environmental impact.
The Solution

Magical Mushroom Company® provided a bespoke Mushroom® Packaging solution, tailored to Ramnarine’s AHRS sensor.
Using agricultural byproducts such as hemp combined with mycelium—the root structure of fungi—Magical Mushroom Company® created a durable and fully compostable material. This innovative process grows packaging in Molds specifically designed for the product, ensuring a secure and custom fit.
The resulting packaging meets Raymarine’s high durability standards, offering exceptional protection while breaking down into nutrient-rich compost within 40 days. This solution proved both practical and planet-positive.
