Founded in 1923, Raymarine is a leading manufacturer and supplier of electronic equipment for marine use, headquartered in Fareham, England. Known for their industry-leading products, Raymarine serves both recreational and light commercial markets.
To support their environmental commitment, Raymarine sought to replace plastic foam packaging with sustainable alternatives. For the DockSense™ Control cameras—an industry-first docking solution with object recognition and motion sensing—they partnered with Magical Mushroom Company®.
The collaboration produced custom Mushroom® Packaging, combining advanced protection for high-tech equipment with environmental stewardship. This partnership, which began in 2023, continues to thrive in 2025, reflecting the long-term success of this sustainable solution.

THE PROBLEM
DockSense™ Control required packaging that could safeguard its sensitive cameras while aligning with Raymarine’s policy of reducing plastic foams.
Polystyrene foam accounts for 90% of marine debris, and its continued use conflicted with Raymarine’s commitment to protecting the oceans.
The challenge was to find a durable, sustainable packaging material that matched the rugged reliability of DockSense™ Control while eliminating plastic waste.
THE SOLUTION
Magical Mushroom Company® developed bespoke Mushroom® Packaging for DockSense™ Control cameras, offering a durable, compostable alternative to polystyrene.
The packaging was crafted from recycled agricultural waste, such as hemp, bound with mycelium, the root-like structure of mushrooms. Grown in moulds, the packaging provided a snug, shock-resistant fit for the cameras.
This innovative solution not only met Raymarine’s high standards but also decomposes naturally within 40 days, leaving no trace behind.
THE RESULT
The custom Mushroom® Packaging passed rigorous drop, impact, and stress tests, ensuring DockSense™ Control cameras were fully protected during transit.
Raymarine successfully reduced their reliance on plastic foam packaging, aligning with their environmental goals while maintaining product integrity.
By 2025, the continued use of Mushroom® Packaging reinforces Raymarine’s commitment to sustainability, providing a proven, long-term solution for their high-tech products.
