TOM DIXON GEODESIC DOME
SUSTAINABLE ARCHITECTURE: TOM DIXON AND MAGICAL MUSHROOM COMPANY® CREATE MYCELIUM GEODESIC DOME
SUSTAINABLE ARCHITECTURE DESIGN
Tom Dixon, one of Britain’s most iconic designers, collaborated with Magical Mushroom Company® to create a geodesic Dome prototype for the London Design Fair. This innovative structure was crafted using mycelium and hemp, combining natural materials with cutting-edge design.
The geodesic Dome reflects Tom Dixon’s commitment to sustainability and material exploration. As an advocate for environmentally conscious innovation, Dixon partnered with Magical Mushroom Company® to showcase the potential of biodegradable materials in architecture.
The collaboration not only delivered a visually striking structure but also set a new standard for sustainable design, demonstrating how nature-inspired solutions can redefine the built environment.
“THIS GEODESIC DOME EXEMPLIFIES THE FUTURE OF SUSTAINABLE ARCHITECTURE.”
THE PROBLEM
For the London Design Fair, Tom Dixon sought to create an architectural structure that aligned with his commitment to sustainability.
Traditional materials like plastic and metal, while functional, conflicted with the vision of designing a fully biodegradable and environmentally friendly structure.
The challenge was to create a modular, lightweight, and durable geodesic structure that embodied sustainability while meeting the functional and aesthetic standards of a high-profile design event.
THE SOLUTION
Magical Mushroom Company® collaborated with Tom Dixon to design and grow the geodesic Dome using mycelium and hemp, a process that required no environmental manipulation.
The mycelium materials were grown into custom moulds, creating strong yet biodegradable modules for the Dome. This process, combined with hemp’s natural carbon-sequestering properties, ensured the Dome was both lightweight and structurally sound.
The geodesic design allowed for flexibility, and the material’s waterproof and fire-retardant properties added practical functionality, making the Dome an ideal solution for showcasing sustainable architecture.
THE RESULT
The geodesic Dome captivated audiences at the London Design Fair, demonstrating the aesthetic and functional potential of mycelium-based materials.
The project reinforced Magical Mushroom Company® and Tom Dixon as pioneers in sustainable design, inspiring conversations about the future of architecture.
Plans for scaling the Dome’s concept into commercial applications are underway, with the Dome’s success showcasing the potential of nature-inspired solutions to transform the built environment.
“The geodesic Dome showcases the endless potential of mycelium-based materials.
Our collaboration with Magical Mushroom Company® brought this architectural marvel to life, proving that sustainability and design excellence can go hand in hand.”
